Guardian Angels are formidable beings. They seem delicate in their depiction on holy cards. Fortunately, Guardian Angels escape their holy cards and leave behind the tame appearance. That’s good for us because our life probably doesn’t look like a holy card. Angels know what to do when things are messy or complex and when life isn’t working out as we had planned.
Guardian Angels go before us everywhere – at work, in school and in the office. They crowd bus stops and shopping centers. Every time you see a person, his or her Guardian Angel is right there as well. When we are lonely, our Guardian Angel is knocking on the door of our soul. Our Guardian Angel guards us from danger, teaches us about Jesus and guides us to make holy choices. They never take a day off or even a coffee break.
Guardian Angels do all these things by highlighting the beauty of Christ. They urge, suggest and prompt us to cling to Jesus. Beauty and pleasure are often opposites. Instead of beauty, the devil uses the pleasures of the world and the enticement of reputation to induce us to use our will against God and to sin. The angels seek to shield us from the temptation. Even if we choose to proceed in temptation, the angels long to rescue us. But angels can’t override our freewill. Neither they, nor we, are robots.
The best way to get to know our Guardian Angel is to speak with the angel often. These guides love us and want us to enter deeply into the graces God gives us. The Guardian Angel prods us to go to Mass and Confession. We may have wounds and fears about going to Mass or Confession. Let the Angels heal and guide us. Nothing compares to Mass and Confession – to meeting Jesus with all His angels and Saints. You are welcome at the Church of Saint Joseph in Aston!
